Soccer Lesson

Rationale/Reflection

This lesson represents Standard Four: Multiple Instructional Strategies. In this lesson, I used the Jigsaw Strategy to learn the major skills needed to play a game of soccer. The students were divided into groups and each individual in a group was given a different sheet of instructions for a skill. The groups then split up and teamed up with members of other groups that had the same skill as they did. They were given time to learn and practice their designated skill. Once their time of learning and practice was complete, they then went back to their origional groups and taught their skills to one another. By the end of the class, each student had been given the opportunity to teach a skill and learn all the other skills from their group members. This strategy had never been used in my Physical Education classes before and it was really neat to see how the students reacted to it. They were excited to learn their new skill but even more excited to share what they had learned with the rest of their group. It was exciting to see them take ownership to what they were learning. We had a time of review at the end and I was pleased to see how much they had learned throughout the lesson. It worked great.

SOCCER UNIT

Lesson Plan

Teacher:  Jessica Alexander                                        Date:  May, 2006

Unit:  Soccer                                                               Day of Unit:  Day 3

Lesson Focus:  General Soccer Skills              Grade Level: 9th - 12th  grade

Equipment: 5 cones, 5 soccer balls, info. Sheets, 3 white boards

Student Objectives:

Primary Psychomotor:   By the end of the class, the students will be able to dribble, pass, and trap, (general soccer skills), correctly after learning from each of the members in their group and spending time practicing.

Primary Cognitive: By the end of the class, the students will demonstrate a knowledge of the correct mechanics for performing the general soccer skills through explanations and discussions with in their groups.

Primary Affective:  By the end of the class, the students will observe and help each other learn the general soccer skills better by pointing out the things being done both right and wrong.

Teacher Objectives: As I teach my classes, I will be aware of what is going on around me and make extra effort to let my students know what they are doing both right and wrong.

Class Schedule:

Ø       Students: after coming out of locker room, sit in assigned groups (3 in each group).

Teacher: checking students for proper attire, available for any assistance.

Ø      Introduction: In order to play a game of soccer successfully, it is very important to know and understand how to use the general soccer skills. Today, you the students are going to do the teaching. Each member of your group will master a different general soccer skill and then teach that skill to the rest of your group. By the end of the class, you will know the three basic skills of soccer and be ready to use them in a game situation.

Ø      In the center of your group, you will see a cone; students asked to each take a sheet from under the cone and read what it is labeled. Sheets will be labeled: Passing, Trapping, and Dribbling. The label on these sheets will determine how the students will then divide, and what they will be learning so they can teach it to their group members.

Ø      Students will then divide once more into three groups, based on the labeling of the sheet they have. Students in groups will review together their topic, learn and practice performing this skill. After 10 minutes of learning and practicing their assigned skill, students will go back to original groups, present what they learned to their groups, and teach them how to use these skills.  Students will teach, practice, and learn together. As a follow up, in the next class, there will be a time of review and the skills will be used in game play.

Ø      Closure: class sitting together as a whole. Quick review of the three general soccer skills and key points of those skills (question and answer review). Remind students that these skills will be put to use in a game play next class.

Ø      Dismiss to locker room.

Ø      This lesson is based on the Interpersonal Model and makes use of the Jigsaw Strategy.
